What is GEO? Generative engine optimization, explained.
GEO is how businesses get cited and recommended by AI engines instead of just ranked by Google. This guide explains what generative engine optimization is, how it differs from SEO and AEO, how the engines pick their sources, how to measure it, and whether you need tools, a course or a team.
01, DefinitionWhat is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
The answer
GEO, generative engine optimization, is the practice of making your business a source that AI engines cite and recommend when they generate answers.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews a question your business should answer, the engine composes a response from sources it trusts. GEO is the work of becoming one of those sources: clear identity, quotable content, structured data and open crawler access. For the hands-on playbook, see our AI search optimization guide.
02, DifferenceGEO vs SEO vs AEO: what actually differs?
The answer
SEO earns a position in a list of results; GEO earns a citation inside an answer; AEO is essentially GEO by another name.
- 1SEO (search engine optimization). Winning ranked positions in traditional results. Still the foundation: engines learn about you by crawling the same web.
- 2GEO (generative engine optimization). Being quoted or recommended inside AI-generated answers, where there may be only one or two named sources.
- 3AEO (answer engine optimization). The same discipline framed around answer engines. In practice, the work overlaps almost completely with GEO.
03, MechanicsHow do generative engines choose who to cite?
The answer
Engines cite sources they can access, verify and quote, so GEO optimizes for those three tests.
- 1Access. The engine's crawlers must be allowed in. Robots rules, firewalls and CDN settings silently decide whether you exist to an AI engine at all.
- 2Verification. Your name, location, services and claims must match across your site, your profiles and the wider web. Inconsistent entities do not get recommended.
- 3Quotability. Direct answers, concrete facts and labeled structure give an engine something safe to lift into a response. Vague marketing copy gives it nothing.
04, MeasurementHow do you measure GEO?
The answer
You measure GEO by tracking citations, AI referral traffic and branded demand over time, not by testing one prompt on one afternoon.
- 1Citation tracking. Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, on a schedule, and record when your business is named or linked.
- 2AI referral traffic. Watch analytics for visits arriving from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini surfaces.
- 3Branded search growth. People who hear about you from an AI answer often verify you on Google next; rising branded searches are the echo of AI recommendations.
05, ToolingDo you need GEO tools or a GEO course?
The answer
Tools monitor and courses explain, but GEO results come from execution on a real website, maintained as the engines change.
Citation trackers, log analyzers and rank tools are useful instruments, and a course can teach the vocabulary. Neither rewrites your pages into quotable answers, fixes your structured data, opens crawler access or keeps your entity consistent across the web, and that execution is where citations come from. Most business owners get further having it done than learning to do it, the same way most do not take a course to do their own bookkeeping.
